GOLDEN ALES - Golden ales are a type of pale, well-hopped and quenching beer which were developed in the 1980s when independent brewers attempted to win younger drinkers from heavily-promoted lager brands. Strengths range from 3.5% to around the 5.5% mark, and they are characterised by a biscuity and juicy malt character derived from pale malts, underscored by tart citrus fruit and peppery hops, often with the addition of hints of vanilla and cornflour.
Salopian Brewery was founded as Snowdonia Brewery in 1994 by Brewer Martin Barry in North Wales but in 1995 he relocated to Shrewsbury and renamed it Salopian. At its inception the brewery was all into cask in the traditional Midlands style but in 2008 a change was made to a more modern hop led style. This transition has proved very successful, with sales trebling since 2008 and the brewery’s recognition at every level of competition. A new 30 barrel brewery was installed in 2010 and the brewery relocated in 2014 to a purpose built 50 barrel plant.
