Finca de Azabache - Rioja Reserva 2012


Created from 70% Tempranillo and 30% Graciano, this 2012 Rioja Reserva boasts an intense ruby red colour alongside wonderful balsamic and ripe fruit aromas with notes of vanilla, chocolate and leather. On the palate it is well-balanced with a soft structured, with flavours of blackberries, mulberry, vanilla and spice before a long finish where oak-ageing and mature tannins complete a superb experience.

    TEMPRANILLO - Tempranillo is the basis of the finest red wines from Spain and Portugal but has also been successfully adopted in the New World. Deep in colour with moderate tannins, tempranillo offers a wide range of aromas and flavours ranging from strawberries, blackcurrants and cherries in younger wines from cooler regions, to prunes, chocolate and tobacco in aged wines from warmer climes.

    FINCAS DE AZABACHE is a state of the art cooperative, founded in December 1956. The Bodegas now owns 2600 hectares of vineyards at the foot of Mount Yerga, in the dry region of the Rioja Baja. With limited risk of rot, it is an area conducive to the principles of organic viticulture, to which the Bodegas is firmly and successfully committed. The cooperative have recently invested heavily in a new winery, the fruits of which we are now seeing.

    RIOJA, SPAIN - Arguably Spain's top wine region, Rioja is home to bright, berry-scented, barrel-aged red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha. Located in northern Spain, Rioja is bordered by the Cantabrian Mountains whose shelter provides relatively warm, dry conditions. Soils vary from place to place, with the finest containing high levels of limestone, and Graciano and Carignan are also prevalent in the region’s reds, the best of which are matured in new oak barrels. Rioja blanco is also now developing into a successful white wine variety.
